What is wrong with the American Beef? Is it because it is full of antibiotics, raised in CAFOs, fed a diet of which it, biologically, can’t digest? Is it because studies have proven that with its meat and milk packed with so much hormones, girls develop breasts at a far too young age? Could it simply be too dangerous to eat? Koreans seem to believe so. Tens of thousands of people have been storming the streets in protest of American beef imports, scheduled to start again. The embargo started in 2003 due to high risk of Mad Cow disease and low sanitary conditions.
I have never been ashamed to say I love my meat, but I love it when I know where it is from and how it has been raised. What we find in supermarkets and sold at $6 a pound, even when flew from across the globe, is no meat, or even food. It is toxic, unnatural and inhuman. The reality about the meat industry is out there, for everyone to read (New York Times, Meatrix, Omnivore Dilemma). The problem is that believing and admitting is a society cultural wake up call, and most are not ready for.
We can say what we want about the protests in Korea (the web is full of contradictions, opinions, pros and cons) the reality remains, when was last time people went to the streets to protest about food quality? When was last time people went to the streets to protest period?
